How Big Is A King Size Bed, Really?
By Angela Glancy
While it may seem like a simple task to figure out what size bed you have, it sometimes is not so easy. Some sizes have variations, so it is important to know exactly what size you have before you go off to buy your linen. Take the king size bed for example. You have the standard king size bed and the California one, and then there are variations on each.
Standard King Dimensions
While dimensions of a regular king may vary, the standard measurement for the standard king one is 76 x 80 inches. Most bedding for a standard king size mattress will be 80 inches long. Before you buy new linen for your bed, though, it is not a bad idea to take your bed’s measurements. Then check the linen packaging to make sure that you have a match. If you have a pillow top mattress, make sure that you take that into your measurement considerations. You also want to note if your mattress is extra thick, and you will want to compare that to the bedding package as well before purchasing new linen for your king size bed. For thick mattresses or pillow tops, make sure that you select a deep pocket fitted sheet set for the best fit.
California King Dimensions
If you do not have a standard sized king bed, then you probably have a California king. The measurements for a California king are a little narrower and a little longer, measuring 72 x 84 inches. Basically a California king takes four inches from the side of the bed and adds it to the bottom. You may want to keep this in mind when you are decorating, because if you have a narrow room, a California king may help you keep the room from feeling quite so crowded. The California king is also a good option for tall people, because it does give you that extra four inches in length. As a result of this size difference in the two models of king size beds, you need to be especially vigilant when you are shopping for linens, because standard king sheets will not fit a California king bed well at all.
The Name Game
Now that you have an understanding of the dimensions of each bed, it is time to throw a wrench into the works. If you see a reference to eastern king size bed, this is a standard king, and if you see the term western king size bed, it is referring to a California king. There is also a European kind as well whose measurements are usually denoted in centimeters, but when they are translated into inches it measures 60 x 75 inches.
Further Variations in Size
Now that you have an understanding of the basic styles, you need to keep in mind that there are also size variations between brands. So when you are shopping for a new bed frame, linen, or a new mattress and box spring set, make sure to measure each component to make sure that it will fit your particular king size bed.
